A Six-Pack Shocker, Homicidal Hairspray, and Boxer Whiplash

Although I cracked jokes to keep the mood light while Devon endured the orb’s abuse, it soon became unbearable to watch him struggle. At times I had to excuse myself to hide the tears I couldn’t seem to control. The kid had determination. The problem was, he had been torturing himself for hours and hadn’t yet managed to scream one real sentence. (Well, that’s not entirely true; he did say, “Fuck this!” one time.) Unless humankind was ready to hop aboard the happy train in response to hearing Devon yell every profanity in the book, we were doomed.

After hour six of his labored efforts, Inanna recommended we all take a break. When I went to give Devon yet another pep talk, Inanna grabbed my arm and gestured for me to follow her. Rigel had joined Devon, patting his shoulder in encouragement, so I went with Inanna into the corridor.

Her posture was stiff, her strides quick, and, quite frankly, her demeanor had me worried. She came to a halt as soon as we turned the corner and I almost ran into her.

“Autumn,” she said, followed by a pause.

I knew what she was going to say, so I said it first. “You don’t think he can master it, do you?”

“I truly honor his effort; I do. But regrettably, we are running low on time.”

“I know.”

“I didn’t want to ask in front of Rigel, because I know he’d never allow it to happen, but… do you want to give it a test run?”

My legs wobbled, and I had to lean against the wall for support. Rigel had been thrilled when he’d learned they weren’t going to kill me right away. A few extra days with him—heck, a few extra hours—would be terrific. No, I couldn’t allow myself to think that way. This was the entire human race we were talking about.

“I kinda have no choice,” I said. “Because of this whole prophecy thing, will I need to get approval from your leader or whatever?”

Inanna leaned against the wall next to me. “No one will oppose your using the communication device. If you are the catalyst, this is one way to find out. And frankly, it saves us the hassle of neutralizing you.”

“I don’t get it,” I said. “Why this dog-and-pony show to prolong my execution? Why not make Enlil’s day and serve me up in a body bag right now?”

There was an uncomfortable silence before Inanna spoke the one word that made my insides ache. “Rigel.” She pushed herself away from the wall and turned her back to me. “There are many of us who don’t want to see him go.”

A pang of guilt stung me at the reminder that his death would ultimately be my fault, and it was made worse by Inanna’s obvious distress.

She continued, “We both know we can’t let a war develop, especially if word spreads that your soul is blue. All the same, it would’ve been nice to extend this long enough so that Rigel’s family could make it here to see him.
